Cloud Computing - The Potential Impact on Recruitment
Author: Chantelle Booysen
Cloud Computing allows users to access the personal information from any computer with internet access – and it’s a concept that is still in the ‘adoption’ phase in South Africa.
Would the large scale adoption of cloud computing impact the recruitment of IT staff?
We believe that it would have the following implications:
- Outsourcing of IT functions to outside suppliers will mean that fewer IT people will be employed by corporate companies, shifting the bulk of IT employment to suppliers of technology.
- Virtualisation will require IT people to have different skills set – both at task and personality level. Skilled IT people will need to be able to work alone and remotely – and will need to travel more.
- Contracting recruitment will increase as work becomes more project based.
- Consolidation of IT spend as companies shift towards paying one supplier for IT Infrastructure, rather than several. Recruitment spend will be incorporated as suppliers provide a ‘one stop’ IT service.
- Specialisation will increase responsibility on IT suppliers – they’re really need to know their business areas.
- Security spend will increase exponentially – which is partly why cloud computing has not yet taken off. IT people with privacy/ security experience will be in high demand.
These are just some of the impacts cloud computing may have on recruitment of IT staff.
